: The 10 Best Designed BMWs of All Time

#10. E46 M3

Years: 2001-2006
Designed by: Erik Goplen
Complex says: Besides the original E30 M3, this may be our favorite M3 ever designed. It maintains Golpen's original 3-series lines, but adds some needed toughness, with wider front and rear fenders, a raised hood, sideskirts, and a sportier front facsia.

#9. E70 X5

Years: 2007-present
Designed by: Eric Goplen
Complex says: For the latest generation, BMW simply modernized its already class-leading design with smoothed off angles up front and sharper ones out back.

#8. E39 5-Series

Years: 1995–2003
Designed by: Joji Nagashima
Complex says: One of BMW's best-selling models of all time wasn't designed by a German, or even a European. Tokyo-born designer, and long-time BMW employee, Joji Nagashima, who has 22 auto-design patents, was the man responsible for one of the Munich-based company's most recognizable models.

#7. E31 8-Series

Years: 1989–1999
Designed by: Claus Luthe
Complex says: To compete with the Mercedes-Benz SL- and S-Class coupes, BMW designed this futuristic Grand Tourer. With a $100,000 price tag, a top speed of 155 mph, and the first V12 engine mated to a 6-speed transmission, it was BMW's halo car while in production.

#6. Z3 M Coupe

Years: 1998–2002
Designed by: Burkhard Goschel
Complex says: Made in the tradition of old shooting-brake style cars, the Z3 Coupe was based on the M Roadster, but made to be 2.7-times stiffer for better on track performance. Even today, it still looks contemporary and just as mean.

#5. E65 7-Series

Years: 2002–2008
Designed by: Chris Bangle
Complex says: The 2002 BMW 7-Series was one of the most polarizing cars ever made by BMW. Newly appointed design chief Chris Bangle crafted the car as a look towards BMW's future design language. BMW faithfuls made fun of the "Bangle Butt" (the two-level trunk design) and the odd mixture of curves and angles. Eventually, though, the design became a hit, making other car brands rethink the design of their executive sedans.

#4. M1

Years: 1978–1981
Designed by: Giorgetto Giugiaro
Complex says: The only mid-engined BMW ever produced wasn't designed, or built by BMW. BMW teamed up with Lamborghini to produce a sports car that the German company could enter into sports car race series. The result was a super car designed by, arguably, the best car designer in history.

#3. 501 & 502

Years: 1952–1964
Designed by: Peter Szymanowski
Complex says: The 501 was the first car to come from BMW after the Second World War. It was a lavishly designed luxury sedan meant to go head-to-head with Mercedes-Benz. For the 502, BMW expanded the line and added coupes and cabriolets like the one seen above.

#2. 2002

Years: 1968–1976
Designed by: Giovanni Michelotti
Complex says: The car credited as being the first true compact sports car was an exercise in simplicity. If you opted for the Turbo and got the full kit (as seen above), you were treated to a new front facsia and fenders for an even sportier look.

#1. E30 M3

Years: 1982–1992
Designed by: Claus Luthe
Complex says: German designer Claus Luthe is credited with turning the BMW brand around and putting it on its path of world domination. One of the most important cars to come out of his time with BMW was the E30 3-series and the first M3. A 3-series with a wide-body kit, new front facsia, side skirts, and a huge wing, the E30 M3 can be considered the most important car in BMWs history, if not the best designed. Simple and purposeful, like all sports should be.
